The Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network (JYAN) is an independent, youth-led, non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to youth development and human rights advocacy. JYAN is supported by youth values and seeks to develop, empower, and sustain a cadre of youth advocates to lobby for change on behalf of young people by promoting positive behaviours, teaching techniques of positive advocacy, contributing to policies affecting them and building their capacity in Jamaica, the Caribbean and beyond.
About the Role
In March 2021, JYAN began advocacy work focusing on the impact of health and nutrition in the school environment on children and young people, with particular focus on the need for Jamaica to finalise and implement the School Nutrition and Wellness Policy. Jamaica needs the School Nutrition Policy to ensure our children’s right to a healthy school environment and reduce the social and economic impacts of poor nutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on the society. The videos developed under the HNYAM Project seek to: (1) bring attention to the unhealthy school nutrition environment (2) highlight the importance of restricting the promotion and access to unhealthy food and beverages in schools; (3) raise awareness about the role of the School Nutrition Policy in providing good nutrition and protecting the well-being of children and youth in schools.
